A seventy-five-day challenge for iPhone

You’re going to miss a day.

75 Kind asks, before you start, what should happen when you do: a grace day, a freeze, or a reset to Monday. Then it keeps you company the whole way.

The premise

It was always going to happen once.

Most seventy-five-day challenges end on the first missed day. This one asks, before you start, what a missed day should cost — and keeps to your answer.

Grace day

Skip it and keep going. Three across the whole challenge.

Streak freeze

Pause the count for a day. One a week.

Reset to Monday

Start this week over. Your first ten days stay.

Change your policy later. It takes effect from today, and your history stays exactly as it is.

Setting up

Four questions, out loud.

Melonie is the voice that sets you up. She asks, you answer — out loud, or typed if you’d rather — and your missions land as you say them. What she hears is understood on the phone and goes nowhere else.

  1. Hi, I'm Melonie. What do you want to work on for the next 75 days?
  2. Good. What does a day need to include for it to count?
  3. Are you starting today, or already on your way?
  4. Last one. You may miss a day at some point. What should happen when you do?

Already on your way?

Day twelve of a challenge you started somewhere else? Say so, and Melonie picks up on Day 12. The eleven days before you got here won’t count as missed, the photos you’ve taken so far each find their day, and nothing starts over.

Melonie’s first question on the phone: what do you want to work on for the next 75 days?

The trail

Seventy-five days, painted.

Every day is a step along a painted trail. Done days light their lamps, a grace day keeps its own mark, and today glows. Walk it up a mountain, through New York or across Antigua, under your own sky: the weather on the trail is the weather where you are.

Open it flat and the painting runs from edge to edge. Hold it like a book and the map takes one page while today takes the other.

The map open flat: the Summit painting runs to both edges of the display, with the trail climbing from the cabin through Meadow, Forest and Canyon to the summit at day seventy-five, and the tab bar down the right edge.

Missions

A day is five missions, or three, or one.

A workout, three litres of water, no pastries, twenty minutes of Spanish, a photo. Whatever you said counts, counts. Or take the challenge everyone knows by name.

The 75-day challengeon Melonie’s first question lands the classic, ready-made:

  • Two 45-minute workouts
  • A gallon of water
  • No alcohol
  • 10 pages of nonfiction
  • A progress photo

“Here’s the classic. Take anything off, or add your own.”

Health counts a workout

A workout on your watch offers to close the mission. It offers; you decide.

Log a mission with Siri

“Log a mission in 75 Kind” — and the phone asks which one. “What’s open in 75 Kind” answers.

Change a mission, keep the history

Past days are judged by the missions you had then.

The widget

Today, on the home screen.

See which day it is and what’s left, without opening the app. A finished mission fills its ring and fades back. Your notes and photos never appear on the home screen.

Journey

You won’t remember what day one looked like.

So take a picture. The page of your Spanish notebook, the run, the shelf you finally cleared. On day forty, drag between them.

Day one: a new spiral notebook open on a kitchen table, one page blank, the other headed “Día 1” with three short lines of Spanish.
Day forty: the same notebook, both pages full of Spanish verb tables and sentences, words crossed out and rewritten, sticky tabs at the edge and the pencil worn short.

Then and now

Thirty-nine days between these two. Drag to compare.
